A Rich History with a Bright Future

Founded in 1870, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania is one of the oldest otorhinolaryngology programs in the nation. We have a long and distinguished history of providing outstanding patient care that has been cultivated through years of experience in treating the diseases of the ear, nose and throat. Our mission to advance the field of otorhinolaryngology is founded on our extensive research and teaching divisions where we develop novel treatment techniques and train the future leaders of our specialty.

Creating A Network of Expertise

As the department nears our 150th Anniversary, it is a reminder to reflect on our accomplishments—not only at Penn, but the accomplishments of our alumni across the country and around the world. To celebrate our history and position ourselves for continued success in the future, we have created The 1870 Society. The 1870 Society will serve
to strengthen our alumni community, provide a global network, and contribute to the advancement of the department’s education mission.

Training Programs for Tomorrow’s Medical Leaders

We are proud to have one of the most sought-after otorhinolaryngology residency and fellowship programs in academic medicine. Every year, we receive nearly 400 applications for our coveted five residency and six fellowship positions. Under the direction of our world-class faculty, residents and fellows undergo rigorous training rotations, covering general otorhinolaryngology, surgery, facial plastic and reconstruction, head and neck oncology, rhinology, otology, and pediatric otolaryngology

Investing In The Generations To Come
The academic development of our residents and fellows is incredibly important, especially in today’s ever changing field. However, securing funds for non-clinical training can be difficult. Your support can help ensure that our trainees receive a well-rounded medical education that prepares them for the future of healthcare.
We welcome your interest in supporting The 1870 Society Endowment Fund to
help shape the future leaders of our field.
